An original oil on canvas painted after "La Simplicité" (c. 1759) by Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725–1805), the celebrated French Rococo master renowned for his tender figure studies.
The subject holds a daisy in quiet contemplation — petals to be plucked one by one in the age-old game of "he loves me, he loves me not" (effeuiller la marguerite) — a motif Greuze used to evoke romantic longing and the bittersweet uncertainty of young love.
In this interpretation, the figure is rendered as a young woman rather than a girl, set against a dramatic stormy landscape that deepens the emotional mood. A faithful yet personal reimagining of one of Greuze's most beloved works.
